The most important first is that most couples desire to have children sooner or later hold a baby in their arms!
I want to get pregnant, but it doesn’t work – when should I go to the doctor?
You must have to go to your gynecologist if you are planning to get pregnant. You should not underestimate the psyche. In 10 to 15 % of all cases of unwanted pregnancies, doctors find no biological causes. Especially we women suffer massively when the desire for children remains unfulfilled. At this point, I want to tell you explicitly: You cannot help it! But it doesn’t make sense if you let yourself be turned upside down – and the reason for your partner’s unfulfilled desire for children might be your partner. In rare cases, artificial insemination is the only way to get the child you want. Before you decide on artificial insemination, you should talk openly about whether and how far you want to go down this path. It can be physically and psychologically very exhausting.
Artificial insemination is a generic term for various techniques to artificially induce a pregnancy. Here there are the following possibilities:
Intrauterine insemination means as much as sperm transfer. This artificial insemination makes sense if the man has a poor spirogram. The sperm cells are prepared and transferred directly into the woman’s uterus.
In vitro fertilization, also called IVF. In this procedure, a woman’s eggs are extracted from the woman’s ovary and brought together with the man’s sperm in a test tube. After successful fertilization, they are reinserted into the uterus.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection or also called ICSI. A special type of IVF. If the man’s sperm quality is too low, a single sperm cell can be injected directly into the egg. Here too, after successful fertilization, the egg is reinserted into the uterus.
Who bears the costs of artificial fertilization?
The costs for examinations at the gynecologist and urologist are usually covered by health insurance. For the listed methods of artificial insemination, the statutory health insurance covers 50 percent of the costs if certain conditions are met:
- You must be married. You and your partner must have reached a minimum age of 25 years.
- The woman must not be older than 40 years, and the man must not be older than 50 years.
- The treatment must have a medical necessity.
- There must have been a consultation on the medical, psychological, and social aspects of artificial insemination.
- From a medical point of view, there must be a sufficient prospect of success.
There are also regulations regarding the number of attempts at artificial insemination concerning co-payment. For example, the health insurance company pays up to a maximum of eight sperm transfers; IVF and ICSI are covered up to three times. But there are also restrictions here. You can always ask your health insurance company for information on this subject. Private health insurance companies vary in their regulations on cost coverage, and you should, therefore, ask them individually.
